WENATCHEE — Imagine it’s Thanksgiving. Did you just cringe a little bit? That’s because everyone occasionally experiences the tired cliche of the visiting relative who doesn’t share the same politics as most of the family. Sometimes it’s actually you that is the outlier with the rest of your clan.
Braver Angels is putting on a workshop at the Wenatchee Public Library on August 4 called “Skills for Disagreeing Better.” If that already sounds like something you or someone you know could benefit from, you’re not alone.
In today's polarized climate, people often misunderstand the core values and beliefs of those with differing political views. Instead of seeing them as they see themselves, we tend to perceive our own side as principled and the opposing side as self-serving.
Bridging this divide requires improved communication skills. We often struggle with active listening, identifying common ground, and sharing our perspectives in a way that fosters connection rather than exacerbates misunderstanding.
Even now, as you read this, you’re thinking that all of these things apply to the people that don’t share your politics… but not you.
Learning to disagree constructively in these polarized times means accurately recognizing both our differences and our shared understandings.
The goals of this workshop include gaining a deeper understanding of the values and concerns of individuals with differing political views, developing enhanced listening skills to ensure others feel heard and Improving the ability to express viewpoints in a way that resonates with others, even in disagreement.
Tickets are free, and donations are appreciated. You can use promo code BRAVER during registration for a free ticket. Donations above the free ticket amount support Braver Angels, a 501(c)(3) organization.
The 90-minute discussion and workshop will be held at the Wenatchee Public Library, 310 Douglas Street on August 4 from 6:30–8 p.m. If you have questions or just want to know more, contact Janice via email at jdickinson@braverangels.org
