Wenatchee schools seek input ahead of potential 2026 high school bond

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee School District is asking for community input as it moves closer to a decision on a proposed replacement for Wenatchee High School.

District officials are collecting feedback through an online form as part of a community-driven design process, with input expected to help shape a proposal that could go before voters in November 2026.

Wenatchee High School, which completed construction all the way back in 1972, was designed for a smaller student population and is increasingly out of step with current educational needs, according to the district.

Classrooms and learning spaces do not support modern teaching methods or technology, and some students are learning in portable buildings not intended for long-term use. Career and technical education programs are also limited by a lack of dedicated, hands-on space.

The building’s infrastructure presents additional challenges. The original HVAC system can no longer be fully repaired, nor obsolete replacement parts even ordered, and aging ventilation systems across the district were not designed to handle wildfire smoke or extended periods of extreme heat, conditions that can affect student health and learning.

District leaders say the proposed bond would focus on constructing a new Wenatchee High School with modern classrooms, expanded career and technical education facilities and improved building systems, along with additional upgrades across the district.

“We want to hear from everyone,” said Superintendent Kory Kalahar. “This is our community’s school, and the design should reflect what matters most to the people of Wenatchee.”

The School Board is expected to consider the proposed design and bond details at its June 23 meeting, with a resolution scheduled that would place the measure on the November 2026 ballot.

Community members can provide input through the district’s website at wenatcheeschools.org.
