WENATCHEE — With spring sports and field trip season approaching and an eye toward next school year, the Wenatchee School District is hosting two pop-in recruitment events this month to attract new school bus drivers and substitute drivers.
The drop-in hiring events will be held Jan. 15 and Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the district’s transportation department building at 1201 Millerdale Ave. The district describes the events as casual and low-pressure, designed to make it easy for interested people to stop by, ask questions, and see what the job is actually like.
District officials say additional drivers are needed to fill current openings and to make sure there are enough drivers available to support a busy spring schedule of sports and field trips, as well as regular routes heading into the next school year.
During the pop-in events, attendees will be able to apply in person, meet current drivers and transportation staff, and even test drive a bus to get a feel for the work.
The job is listed as a flexible option for a wide range of people, including retirees, parents with children in the school district, or anyone looking for additional income with a predictable schedule. Driving for the district can be either full-time or part-time and includes summers and holidays off, with optional evening and weekend shifts available.
Drivers start at $26.53 per hour and receive full medical and dental benefits. Training is paid, and the district says schedules can be built to fit a variety of availability needs.
In addition to attending the pop-in events, interested candidates can also apply online through the district’s transportation department page at wenatcheeschool.org/transportation.
