Wenatchee opens Junior City Council applications after successful first year

Posted

WENATCHEE — For Wenatchee School District students curious about how decisions get made — and how to have a voice in them — Wenatchee’s Junior City Council is opening applications for a new year.

After a successful first year bringing student voices into city government, the City of Wenatchee is now accepting applications for the 2026–27 Junior City Council, a program designed to give high school students a seat at the table in local civic life.

Open to students in grades 9–12, the Junior City Council offers hands-on experience in municipal government, connecting participants directly with the work of the Wenatchee City Council. Students serve in an advisory role, providing input on issues ranging from public works and parks to public safety, technology, and community development.

The program was launched to create a stronger connection between young residents and the decisions shaping their community. In its first year, student members participated in meetings, shared perspectives, and helped demonstrate the value of including youth voices in local governance.

Students selected to serve commit to a two-year term, with monthly meetings lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours. Members are also expected to complete at least 20 hours of community service tied to city projects or events, attend City Council meetings throughout the year, and collaborate on community initiatives or policy recommendations.

Eligibility is open to students living within the city of Wenatchee, including those attending local schools, students enrolled outside the district but residing in the city, and homeschool students, provided they remain in good standing throughout their term.

Students interested in serving will need to complete an application and are selected based on leadership, community involvement, and interest in civic affairs.

Applications are due by May 31, 2026. For more information about the program and to apply, go to https://www.wenatcheewa.gov/government/wenatchee-city-council/junior-city-council.

Questions about the program can be directed to the City Clerk’s Office at 509-888-6204 or cityclerk@wenatcheewa.gov.
