Record food drive at Cascade Medical supports Upper Valley MEND

Posted

LEAVENWORTH — Cascade Medical staff set a new record in their annual food drive this year, donating 2,530 pounds of food and $10,698 to Upper Valley MEND in an effort that blended friendly workplace rivalry with a deep commitment to the community.

The tradition, now more than a decade old, pits two teams against each other—staff members with last names A–L versus those M–Z. What began as a lighthearted internal competition has evolved into a major source of support for Upper Valley MEND, which provides healthy food and resources to families across the region.

This year’s contest was narrowly decided. The Harvest Heroes (Team M–Z) won by just 18.8 pounds, contributing 1,343.6 pounds of food and $5,003. The Can-Do Crew (Team A–L) finished with 1,186.4 pounds of food and $5,965. To make participation accessible, every $5 donation counted as one pound of food.

According to staff, the competition drew spirited engagement across departments. One story that emerged from the drive involved nursing staff circulating an envelope that quickly filled with cash. The Can-Do Crew, led by Jerri Smith, director of business services, also sought support from local businesses, boosting totals and fueling the rivalry.

Chief Executive Officer Diane Blake praised employees for their enthusiasm and generosity.

“Our staff never cease to amaze me. They go above and beyond for their patients, for each other, and for our community,” Blake said. “The way they leaned into this food drive, bringing energy, creativity, and heart, is a perfect example of the dedication and compassion that define Cascade Medical. Our community is so fortunate to have people who care this deeply.”

Upper Valley MEND’s programs serve more than 1,200 individuals monthly through its food pantry, and its gleaned produce reaches nearly 10,000 people across Central Washington through the Mobile Produce Pantry and partner groups.

Despite snowy weather, staff from multiple departments, board members and MEND volunteers worked together to deliver this year’s donations. Cascade Medical leaders say the success of the 2024 drive reflects a longstanding culture of generosity, teamwork and community-centered service.
