Police investigate suspected intentionally set brush fires below Fred Meyer

Posted

EAST WENATCHEE — Authorities are investigating a series of brush fires believed to have been intentionally set below the Fred Meyer store in East Wenatchee on the morning of July 2.

An on-duty Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted a significant brush fire burning along the Loop Trail at approximately 7:06 a.m., prompting a response from East Wenatchee and Wenatchee police officers, Douglas County deputies, the Washington State Patrol and Wenatchee Valley Fire Department.

Firefighters extinguished the initial blaze along with several additional fires in the same area. According to the East Wenatchee Police Department, investigators believe all of the fires were intentionally started.

The fires come as Central Washington enters the height of wildfire season, with dry vegetation and warm summer conditions increasing the potential for rapid fire spread. Although firefighters were able to contain the blazes before they grew significantly, intentionally set fires can pose a serious threat to nearby neighborhoods, recreational areas and responding emergency personnel.

Police detained one person seen leaving the area during the initial response, but after identifying the individual, investigators determined the person is not considered a suspect or person of interest in the case.

During the response, an East Wenatchee Police Department patrol vehicle was struck by a passing motorist. Both vehicles sustained minor damage, and no injuries were reported. The Washington State Patrol is investigating that collision.

The East Wenatchee Police Department and the Fire Marshal continue to investigate the fires. Anyone with information is asked to contact RiverCom at 509-663-9911.
