Pets & People Outdoors dog walk returns

Posted

WENATCHEE — Dogs and their owners will once again take to the trails above Wenatchee this spring as the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust prepare to host the third annual Pets & People Outdoors Spring Dog Walk.

The event is scheduled for April 4 at 10 a.m. at Jacobson’s Preserve, where participants will gather for a morning of trail hiking, demonstrations and community education focused on enjoying outdoor spaces safely with pets.

Organizers say the event is designed to encourage people to get outside with their dogs while learning about responsible recreation on local trails.

“We’re proud to be in our third year partnering with Chelan-Douglas Land Trust to encourage pets and people to get outdoors together,” said BJ Andersen, executive director of the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society. “This event reflects our shared commitment to caring for animals, respecting our natural spaces and strengthening community connections here in the Wenatchee Valley.”

Before the hike begins, attendees will hear from WVHS Behavior and Training Manager Jewelee Smith, who will discuss dog behavior and body language on the trail. Land trust staff will also present guidance on trail etiquette, and community vendors will be on site. A rattlesnake avoidance training demonstration with Daryl Ansley is also planned.

The partnership between the two organizations centers on promoting safe outdoor recreation with dogs. The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust manages more than 33 miles of dog-friendly trails in the Wenatchee Foothills, where visitors are encouraged to follow trail etiquette to keep the area safe and accessible for all users.

“One of the best parts of our work at Chelan-Douglas Land Trust is helping people discover the trails and natural places right here in our community,” said Hanne Boskate, executive director of the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. “Events like this give people and their pets a chance to explore a new trail together while learning how we can all care for these special places.”

The Pets & People Outdoors program launched in 2024 as a way to bring people and pets together while promoting trail stewardship and responsible recreation with dogs. This year’s event is presented with support from Nick McLean Real Estate Group, which organizers say is helping expand the initiative’s programming.

The community is invited to attend the free event and join the guided walk at Jacobson’s Preserve.
