TWISP — A panel discussion focused on civic engagement and political participation in rural communities is scheduled for March 28 at the Methow Valley Community Center in Twisp.

The event, titled “The Road to Democracy Goes Through Rural America,” is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the community center, 201 State Route 20. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., according to event organizers.

Organizers said the forum will feature speakers discussing civic participation, leadership development and policy efforts affecting rural communities in Eastern Washington.

Maria Beltran, a Central Washington advocate and former Legislative District 14 state Senate candidate, is scheduled to facilitate the discussion.

Panelists include Sarah Jaynes, executive director of the Rural Democracy Initiative; Elana Mainer, executive director and co-founder of Rural People’s Voice; and Adrianne Moore, executive director of the Progress Alliance of Washington and co-founder of Rural People’s Voice.

The event is hosted by Methow Rising and co-sponsored by Common Power.

Organizers said the discussion will address strategies for expanding civic participation, developing local candidates for public office and influencing policy decisions affecting rural communities.
