CHELAN — After more than two weeks of round-the-clock work, the Knapps Hill Tunnel on U.S. Highway 97A reopened to traffic on Sept. 22 at 1:45 p.m.
Contractor Prime Electric, working with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), replaced the tunnel’s aging light system with new fixtures designed to automatically adjust brightness in response to daylight conditions outside. The upgrade improves visibility for drivers entering and exiting the tunnel, where abrupt changes in light can pose safety risks.
In addition to the new illumination, crews installed wiring and conduit, repaved sections at both ends of the tunnel, and removed graffiti. The $680,000 project began Sept. 8 and required crews to work seven days a week to complete on time.
The previous lighting system had deteriorated, with some fixtures no longer functioning. WSDOT officials said the improvements will help ensure the tunnel remains safe and reliable for years to come, particularly given the heavy local and tourist traffic on the 97A corridor.
Knapps Hill Tunnel, located along the west side of Lake Chelan, is a critical link for residents, freight haulers, and visitors traveling between Wenatchee and Chelan. Seasonal tourism adds to the volume of drivers who rely on the route.
The project is part of WSDOT’s broader focus on maintaining infrastructure and improving driver safety across Central Washington.
Motorists can find updates on U.S. 97A and other highways by visiting WSDOT’s real-time travel map. Project details are also available on the WSDOT construction page.
