Coach Joe Harris, 2013 Boys Soccer team to enter CHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Posted

CHELAN — Chelan High School will induct two standouts into its Athletic Hall of Fame this winter: Longtime boys basketball coach Joe Harris (CHS ’80) and the 2013 Chelan boys soccer team, the program’s first 1A state champions. The ceremony is set for halftime of the Chelan vs. Cashmere boys basketball game on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Chelan High School.

Harris spent 25 seasons on the Chelan sideline and retired in 2016 with a 516–260 career record. His teams captured one state championship, three regional titles, 10 league championships and six district crowns, and nine of his squads brought home state trophies. In 2011 he was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, recognition that reflected not only his winning résumé but his service to the sport statewide, including a stint as WIBCA president.

Joining Harris is the 2013 boys soccer team, which authored a breakthrough run to the 1A title behind grit and timely goals. The Goats finished 16–7–1, sweeping league, district and state crowns. The group helped launch a sustained era for Chelan soccer that included five straight league titles and two additional state trophies in the years that followed. Five players from the roster went on to compete at the college level, and several continue to give back by coaching youth in the Chelan Valley.

Chelan’s Athletic Hall of Fame exists to “recognize and preserve the legacy of those whose accomplishments in athletics have positively impacted Chelan High School,” the school notes, and to inspire future Goats to live the program’s four pillars: being Motivated, Open Minded, Respectful and Engaged. This honor will literally be M.O.R.E. in action.

The induction will take place at halftime on Dec. 30. The district also invites the community to submit future Hall of Fame nominations through the Chelan athletics website.
