CHELAN — Chelan City Councilmember Mark Ericks has resigned from his position, citing ongoing health challenges and an inability to fully meet the demands of the role.
Ericks, who was appointed to the council in 2022 and elected to a four-year term in 2024, submitted a formal letter of resignation that was read aloud during the March 24 council meeting.
“It is with deep regret that I find it necessary to resign from my position as a duly elected member of Chelan City Council,” Ericks wrote, noting he had “struggled with this decision” as his health issues persisted.
While Ericks had continued to participate in meetings remotely, he acknowledged that virtual attendance could not replace full engagement.
“I know that Zoom is no replacement for active full participation … Our constituents and staff deserve this full commitment,” he wrote.
Ericks also pointed to the city’s own attendance policy as a factor in his decision, stating that remaining in the role would place him in violation of council expectations.
The resignation closes a chapter in a long career in public service, which Ericks referenced directly in his letter.
“I have spent my life in public service in various roles at the city, county, state, and federal level,” he wrote. “I remain deeply committed to the value of public service and understand the challenges of that commitment.”
Despite stepping down, Ericks emphasized his continued connection to the community and willingness to support the city in the future.
“I will miss the interaction with our amazing staff,” he wrote, adding that Chelan “benefits from having the most amazing staff” and offering his “support, advice, and counsel” if needed going forward.
Mayor Erin McCardle said Ericks’ contributions to the council have been “absolutely invaluable,” and expressed hope he may return for a final appearance.
“I’m going to try and convince him to come to one more council meeting so that we might be able to officially recognize his contribution,” McCardle said.
Ericks’ resignation creates an immediate vacancy on the seven-member council. The city is expected to begin accepting applications for the position, with interviews scheduled for the May 12 council meeting. Applicants will be invited to speak publicly before the council deliberates and votes on an appointment.
