LEAVENWORTH – After nearly four decades of dedicated service, Chelan County Fire District #3 (CCFD #3) announced the retirement of Chief Kelly O’Brien.
Chief O’Brien started his career in 1988 as a volunteer. In 1994, he was hired as CCFD #3’s second paid full-time employee. Over the years, Chief O’Brien rose through the ranks, working as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and up to Captain and Assistant Chief. Chief O’Brien also served as the department’s training officer and acting Fire Marshal for the City of Leavenworth. He was hired as the Fire Chief in 2004.
Chief O’Brien oversaw the development of the resident program and high school cadet program, as well as the annexation of the City of Leavenworth into the fire district. He also oversaw the passing of a levy in 2017, which allowed the department to move to the next level of service for an evolving community.
Throughout his tenure, Chief O’Brien furthered the safety and well-being of CCFD #3 residents by championing fuels reduction efforts, encouraging wildfire risk education, and forming key partnerships with community organizations and local agencies.
“We express our deep appreciation for his 36 years of dedicated service,” said CCFD #3 in its announcement.
CCFD #3 will host the community for an open house on Nov. 21, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 228 Chumstick Highway.
