LEAVENWORTH – Cascade High School (CHS) invited the community out to honor its local veterans, active duty servicemembers, and their families on Nov. 8.
“I’m happy that they are taking the time to recognize the sacrifices that we have made,” said Brad Summers, who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1975 to 1982.
This year, the high school expanded its invitation from only veterans and active duty servicemembers, to the entire community.
“I know we have a ton of individuals here in this community who have either family members or themselves been a part of [it], so I love the idea of bringing in community to our school, so that they're a part of what we do and and we're a part of them,” said Principal James Swanson.
With guidance from school staff, students organized the hour-long assembly, arranging a guest speaker, coordinating tribute display, and planning meaningful performances.
“I'm really proud of them. They worked really hard…It's just a nice opportunity for them to show gratitude for our service men and women, and I think that they took it really seriously, and are kind of living up to the moment,” said leadership teacher Roselyn Robison.
Boy Scout Troop 28 presented the colors, the ASL class signed the national anthem, and the Cascade Choir and Band performed traditional patriotic songs. Students also recited poems, shared history, and recognized veterans in attendance, family members, and previous CHS students currently serving.
Lieutenant General Rex McMillan, who served more than 35 years on active duty and in the Marine Forces reserve, was the guest speaker at the event.
The assembly wrapped up with a moment of silence as “Taps” was played, along with a flag folding ceremony. Following the event, guests were invited to write letters of gratitude to veterans and servicemembers, which will be included in care packages put together by the nonprofit, Operation Gratitude.
