Wildfire near Chelan prompts evacuations, state mobilization

UPDATE: As of 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, all Level 3 "Leave Now" evacuations have been reduced to Level 2 "Be Ready" status, according to Chelan County Emergency Management. The affected areas include Hawks Meadow Road, Chukar Run, Dove Hollow Road, Big Sage Lane, Hawks Ridge Road, Columbia Rim Road, Downie Canyon Road, Chelan Butte, Little Butte, and Butte Ranch Road.

The National Interagency Fire Center reports that the fire has now grown to 2,000 acres. Firefighting efforts continue as crews work to further contain the blaze.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared to leave if conditions worsen.

CHELAN—A rapidly spreading wildfire near Chelan has prompted evacuations and the mobilization of state firefighting resources. The fire threatens homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands near the city.

The Stayman Fire, which ignited Tuesday afternoon, has grown to an estimated 1,000 acres. Burning through brush and grass, it is moving swiftly uphill and has reached the top of a nearby ridge.

Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources at 5:00 p.m., following a request from Chelan County Fire District 7 Chief Brandon Asher. The State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray has been partially activated to coordinate assistance efforts.

Several areas, including Hawks Meadow Road, Chukar Run, Dove Hollow Road, Big Sage Lane, Hawks Ridge Road, Columbia Rim Road, Downie Canyon Road, Chelan Butte, Little Butte, and Butte Ranch Road, have been issued mandatory evacuation orders. Residents have been instructed to leave immediately.

Additionally, a Level 1 Fire Advisory, signaling potential danger, has been issued for Chelan, Waterslide Drive, and surrounding areas.

An evacuation center has been established at the United Methodist Church in Chelan to accommodate displaced residents.

The Fire Protection Bureau has ordered five strike teams to assist in containment efforts. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Local authorities are urging residents to stay informed through official channels and to comply with all evacuation orders.

As firefighters work to contain the blaze, the situation remains dynamic and subject to change based on fire behavior and weather conditions.
