Upper Valley Connection Theater Camp returns with ‘Guys and Dolls JR.’ performances

LEAVENWORTH — For more than 20 years, Theater Camp has been an integral part of Upper Valley Connection, an organization that fosters meaningful connection for youth and adults with special needs through sports, arts and other social activities.

On June 26 and 27, participants will take the stage in “Guys and Dolls JR.” for the camp’s annual production.

“I think it continues to carry on not just because it's important to us and our actors, but because the community believes that what we do is important,” said UVC Executive Director Maren Cagle. “This program is a celebration of inclusion, creativity, and the power of believing in yourself and each other.”

The production requires everything that goes into a full theatrical production, said Cagle, from picking a show to designing and building sets, creating costumes, and setting up lights and sound. Starting around September, contracted directors, designers and volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure a successful camp and show in June.

The week-long camp leading up to the production is a whirlwind in the best possible way, said Cagle. Over the course of the week, about 40 actors and 50 volunteers and theater professionals work together on blocking, acting and choreography.

“Watching the actors grow in confidence and really step into their roles over just a few days is something truly special,” said Cagle. “What I look forward to most is that transformation—seeing everything come together after so much hard work and heart.”

When opening night comes on Friday, Cagle says there's nothing quite like it.

“When the curtain rises and the audience erupts with excitement and support, it’s pure magic. It’s such a powerful moment for our actors to feel seen, celebrated, and proud of what they’ve accomplished,” said Cagle.

Performances will be held at Cascade High School on June 26 at 7 p.m. and June 27 at 2 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door. Cagle recommends guests arrive a little early to grab a good seat and come ready to experience something really special.

“We often hear that Theater Camp is one of the best ways to experience live theater, and we would absolutely agree. It’s more than just a performance—it’s a joyful, heartfelt celebration you won’t want to miss,” said Cagle.
