Golf Binge members compete during annual trip to Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho — Eight members of the Golf Binge traveled to Idaho during the first week of September for the group's 2026 event, playing five courses and competing in a series of individual and team contests.

The group played Circling Raven Golf Club, Palouse Ridge Golf Club, the University of Idaho Golf Course, Lewiston Golf and Country Club and Quail Ridge Golf Course. Rain affected portions of the trip, though skies cleared before tee times on multiple days.

Participating this year were Don Valentini, Brian Dougan, Ellis Nierenberg, Matt Froman, Darrell "Doc" Richards, Gil McKinnie, Doug Grout and Bob Matson.

Daily competitions included closest to the pin, long drive, team best ball, most fairways hit, most greens hit in regulation, team pink ball, hybrid games, fewest putts and Stableford scoring.

Richards recorded the week's low net score and received the "Wold Cup," an award named in memory of longtime Golf Binge player Larry Wold. He also received the low net winner's wall plaque.

Valentini posted the low gross score and received the group's ceremonial golf lamp, which was restored during the offseason by Froman. Valentini also won the annual chipping contest.

McKinnie won the putting contest and received a putter donated by a course starter at one of the courses the group played.

Members divided responsibilities for the trip. Froman researched dining options, while Nierenberg and Grout ran the chipping contest. Valentini, Dougan, Nierenberg and Richards tracked scoring and awards. McKinnie and Richards conducted the putting contest, and Matson handled hotel and golf course arrangements.

Golf Binge members who did not attend the 2026 event were Scott McDonald, Dan Dedo, Tom Fagerholm, Lance Stark, Ray Wilson, Mike Mehmer, Chuck Rhoden and Bob Ludeman.
